The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
